Mick Roche, formally Michael Roche, was an Irish hurler who lived from 1943 until his death on 7 December 2016 and whose league and championship career with the Tipperary senior team spanned twelve seasons from 1963 to 1974. He is regarded as one of the greatest centre-backs of all time, in spite of spending much of his playing career in his favoured position of midfield. Born near Carrickbeg, County Tipperary, he was raised in a household with a strong association with Gaelic games, and his father was a founder-member of the Carrick Davins club. With Tipperary he won the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in 1964, 1965 and 1971 and the Munster Senior Hurling Championship five times, and with Carrick Davins he won the Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship in 1966.
