Max Schmeling

Maximilian Adolph Otto Siegfried Schmeling (28 September 1905 to 2 February 2005) was a German boxer who served as world heavyweight champion between 1930 and 1932, winning the title by disqualification against Jack Sharkey and successfully defending it by technical knockout against Young Stribling in 1931. His two fights with Joe Louis, in 1936 and 1938, became worldwide cultural events because of their national significance; Schmeling defeated the rising Louis in a major upset in 1936 but lost the 1938 rematch by first round technical knockout. He is the only boxer to have won the world heavyweight championship on a foul. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992 and was ranked 55th on The Ring magazine's 2003 list of the 100 greatest punchers.
