Mathew Leckie, born on 4 February 1991, is an Australian association football player, called a soccer player in Australia, who plays for the A-League club Melbourne City and for the Australia national team. He grew up in the western suburbs of Melbourne wanting to play Australian rules football, until a move to a more multicultural school at the age of eleven turned him toward football. He signed his first professional contract with Adelaide United in 2009, then built a long career in Germany with Borussia Mönchengladbach, FSV Frankfurt, FC Ingolstadt 04 and Hertha BSC before joining Melbourne City in 2021. Historically a quick and agile winger, he has more recently often been used as a central midfielder. For Australia he took part in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and was named in the squads for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, scoring the winning goal against Denmark in 2022 that sent Australia into the round of 16.
