Lin Dan is a retired Chinese badminton player nicknamed Super Dan after his 2004 All England Open win, widely regarded as the sport's greatest ever singles player. He completed a Super Grand Slam of all nine major titles by age 28 and won Olympic gold in 2008 and 2012. His career carried real controversy: a 2008 on court altercation with a South Korean coach, a widely reported dispute over striking his own coach in front of teammates and media, accusations of deliberately losing matches to aid teammates' Olympic qualification, and a 2016 public admission of an extramarital affair. He retired in July 2020, citing accumulated injuries.
