Levon Aronian

Chess-Family War Games

Levon Aronian is a chess grandmaster born October 6, 1982, in Yerevan, then part of the Soviet Union, who earned the grandmaster title in 2000 at age seventeen. Representing Armenia for most of his career, he won the FIDE World Cup twice, in 2005 and 2017, held the World Blitz Chess Championship title in 2010, and won the Chess960 World Championship in both 2006 and 2007, while helping Armenia win the Chess Olympiad team gold medal three times, in 2006, 2008 and 2012. His classical rating peaked at 2830 in March 2014, then the fourth-highest rating in chess history, and he reached a career-high world ranking of number two in January 2012. In 2021 he switched federations to represent the United States, citing a lack of government support for chess in Armenia, and he has continued to compete internationally from his home in St. Louis, Missouri.
