Larisa Latynina is a Ukrainian former artistic gymnast who competed for the Soviet Union between 1956 and 1964. She won eighteen Olympic medals in total, fourteen of them individual and four as part of a team, including nine gold medals, the most Olympic golds ever won by a female gymnast. Her total of eighteen Olympic medals stood as the record for any athlete in any sport for nearly five decades, and her mark of fourteen individual Olympic medals stood for more than fifty years.
