Kevin Maurice Johnson, born on March 4, 1966 and also known by his initials KJ, is an American former professional basketball player and politician. He played twelve seasons in the National Basketball Association, mostly with the Phoenix Suns, after the Cleveland Cavaliers selected him seventh overall in the 1987 NBA draft and traded him to Phoenix before the end of his first season. A point guard who starred at the University of California, Berkeley, he was a three-time NBA All-Star and a four-time second team All-NBA selection, and the Suns retired his number 7 in 2001. After basketball he founded St. HOPE, worked in education reform and served as the 55th mayor of Sacramento, California, from 2008 to 2016.
