Jose Raul Capablanca y Graupera was a Cuban chess grandmaster who lived from 1888 to 1942 and was the third World Chess Champion, holding the title from 1921 to 1927. A chess prodigy renowned for his exceptional endgame skill and speed of play, he went undefeated from February 1916 to March 1924, a period that included his world championship match against Emanuel Lasker. He died in New York City from a cerebral hemorrhage caused by hypertension, at age 53, and his style influenced later world champions Bobby Fischer and Anatoly Karpov.
