Football Codes

John Long (born 1952) is an Irish retired Gaelic footballer whose league and championship career with the Kerry senior team spanned six seasons, from 1972 to 1977. He first played for Kerry at seventeen, on the minor team, having already won the Hogan Cup, the All-Ireland schools title, with St Brendan's of Killarney in 1969, and he ended his one minor season as an All-Ireland runner-up. He never played under-21 football for Kerry and joined the senior team during the 1971 to 1972 league. Over six seasons he made a number of appearances but did not secure a regular place in the starting fifteen. He won his only All-Ireland medal as a non-playing substitute in 1975, together with three successive Munster medals from the bench in 1975, 1976 and 1977 and three National Football League medals, one of which he earned on the field of play.
