John Coleman, in full John Douglas Coleman, was born on 23 November 1928 and died on 5 April 1973. He was an Australian rules footballer who played for and coached the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. In a playing career of 98 matches he kicked 537 goals, a goal average of 5.48 that is second only to Peter Hudson's 5.64 in VFL and AFL history, and he was known for high-flying marks, sometimes jumping cleanly over opponents. A knee injury ended his playing career at 25, after which he coached Essendon to premiership success. The Coleman Medal for the league's leading goalkicker was named for him in 1981, and in 1996 he was one of twelve inaugural Australian Football Hall of Fame inductees given Legend status.
