Jörg Berger

Jörg Berger, born on 13 October 1944 and died on 23 June 2010, was a German football player and manager. As an active player he played for 1. FC Lok Leipzig in East Germany, and in 1970 a muscle injury forced him to retire, after which he studied at the DHfK Leipzig and began a coaching career. He managed the youth team of the German Democratic Republic and in 1979 used a match in Yugoslavia to flee to West Germany, where he signed with the second division side SV Darmstadt 98. He became known in the Bundesliga as a motivator and a fireman for clubs threatened with relegation, with his best results two third places, with Eintracht Frankfurt in 1990 and FC Schalke 04 in 1996. He last managed Arminia Bielefeld.
