Joe Cooney

Joe Cooney, whose given name is Joseph, is an Irish former hurler born in Bullaun, County Galway, in 1965, who played as a centre-forward for the Galway senior team. He first played at inter-county level as a minor and under-21, made his senior debut in the 1983 championship and went on to win two All-Ireland medals, in 1987 and 1988, along with Connacht and National League medals; Galway also lost four All-Ireland finals during his career. For his club Sarsfields he won two All-Ireland club titles and for Connacht four Railway Cup medals. He made 35 championship appearances, scored 10 goals and 102 points, won five All-Star awards and was named Texaco Hurler of the Year in 1987, and he retired from inter-county hurling in 2001.
