Karl Jochen Rindt, born on 18 April 1942 and died on 5 September 1970, was a racing driver who competed under the Austrian flag in Formula One from 1964 to 1970. He was born in Germany and raised in Austria, began motor racing in 1961 and made his Formula One debut at the 1964 Austrian Grand Prix. He drove for Cooper, Brabham and then Lotus, won his first Formula One race at the 1969 United States Grand Prix and won the 1970 World Drivers' Championship with Lotus after dying in practice for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, which makes him the only posthumous champion. He won six of his 62 Grands Prix and the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans, and campaigned with Jackie Stewart for safety.
