Ingemar Stenmark is a Swedish former alpine ski racer regarded as the greatest technical skier in the sport's history. Between his December 1973 debut and his March 1989 retirement he won 86 World Cup races, a record that stood for more than three decades, and he won two Olympic gold medals at the 1980 Lake Placid Games. He was controversially barred from the 1984 Olympics for accepting promotional payments directly rather than through the Swedish federation, a dispute over the boundary between his growing celebrity and the era's strict amateurism rules.
