Hoseah Hoss Tjale, whose English Wikipedia article spells his surname Tsjale, was born on 6 June 1954 and is a South African ultra-marathon runner. He was brought up in Johannesburg and, as a black South African, was only allowed to take part in road running from 1975, when races were opened to all races. He won the 56 km Two Oceans Marathon in 1980 and the 56 mile London to Brighton ultra-marathon in 1985. At the Comrades Marathon he came second in 1985 and 1990 and third in 1986 and 1987. As an amateur he never received any money for his winnings, and Sello Mokoena and Bruce Fordyce describe him as one of the best competitors to take part in the Comrades Marathon.
