Hans Berliner was an American correspondence chess player and computer scientist who held the title of World Correspondence Chess Champion from 1965 to 1968 and was named a Grandmaster of Correspondence Chess. He later became a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, where he directed development of the chess playing computer HiTech and created the B star search algorithm used in game tree analysis. He also wrote on chess opening theory, notably the book The System. Berliner reached a peak correspondence chess rating of 2763 and lived from 1929 to 2017.
