Gonzalo Castro Randon, born on 11 June 1987 in Wuppertal to Spanish parents, is a German former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He joined Bayer Leverkusen in 1999 and played his first Bundesliga and Champions League games for the senior team at 17, later moving from midfield to the back four before returning to midfield. Over a 17-year professional career he played in more than 400 Bundesliga matches for Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, VfB Stuttgart and Arminia Bielefeld, and he won the DFB-Pokal with Dortmund in 2016-17. Castro chose to represent Germany rather than Spain, won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 2009 and earned a senior Germany cap in 2007. He announced his retirement in September 2022.
