Gino Bartali, born on 18 July 1914 and died on 5 May 2000, was a champion Italian road cyclist nicknamed Gino the Pious and, in Italy, Ginettaccio. He was the most renowned Italian cyclist before the Second World War, winning the Giro d Italia in 1936 and 1937 and the Tour de France in 1938. After the war he added one more victory in each race, the Giro in 1946 and the Tour in 1948, and his 1948 Tour win gave him the largest gap between victories in the race. In September 2013, thirteen years after his death, Yad Vashem recognised him as a Righteous Among the Nations for his efforts to aid Jews during the Second World War.
