Gerhard Stöck

Gerhard Karl Eduard Stöck was a German athlete who was born on 28 July 1911 and died on 29 March 1985. He won the gold medal in the javelin throw at the 1936 Summer Olympics and placed third in the shot put. A versatile thrower who also competed in the decathlon, he won the javelin and pentathlon events at the 1935 World Student Games and the German javelin title in 1938, while finishing second in the German shot put championships four times behind Hans Woellke. At the 1938 European Championships he took silver in the shot put. After the Second World War he kept competing into the early 1950s and then worked as a sports administrator, serving as chef de mission of the Unified German Olympic team in 1956 and 1960. His membership of the Nazi paramilitary Sturmabteilung, which he joined in 1933, and his wartime rank were raised only after his death, and he was also found to have falsified his birth year.
