Gerd Bonk (26 August 1951 to 20 October 2014) was an East German weightlifter who was active from 1969 to 1980. He won a bronze medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics and a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics, and he set three world records. He was the first man in history to clean and jerk 250 kilograms, or 551 pounds. Beyond his Olympic medals he achieved numerous other top three placements at the World Championships and the European Weightlifting Championships. Away from the platform he was also trained as a master mechanic.
