Sir Garfield St Auburn Sobers, also known as Sir Gary or Sir Garry Sobers, was a Barbadian cricketer who lived from 1936 to 2026 and played Test cricket for the West Indies from 1954 to 1974, widely considered the greatest all-rounder in the sport's history for his skill as an aggressive batsman, versatile bowler and excellent fielder. Against Pakistan in 1958 he scored 365 not out, a world record individual Test innings that stood until Brian Lara passed it in 1994, and he captained the West Indies from 1965 to 1972. Across 93 Tests he scored 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 and took 235 wickets at an average of 34.03, and he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975.
