Frederick Joseph "Freddie" McEvoy, nicknamed Suicide Freddie, was born in St. Kilda, Victoria, Australia, on 12 February 1907 and competed for Great Britain as a bobsled driver at the 1936 Winter Olympics, where Olympedia records one bronze medal to his name. He had won the four-man world championship in 1935 and was chosen as an opening ceremony flagbearer. Olympedia describes a man educated at Stonyhurst who became an expert in shooting, race-car driving, deep-sea diving and boxing, who also placed third at the 1936 Vanderbilt Trophy races in a Maserati, and whose later life as a gambler, society figure and self-confessed rogue was as celebrated as his sport. He died on 7 November 1951 off the coast of Morocco, aged 44.
