Eugenio Oliveros Torre is a Filipino chess grandmaster born November 4, 1951, in Iloilo, who in 1974 became the first Filipino and the first non-Soviet Asian player to qualify for the Grandmaster title, earning it at age twenty two after a silver medal performance at the 21st Chess Olympiad in Nice. Widely regarded as the strongest player the Philippines produced during the 1980s and 1990s, he competed on board one for the Philippines across seventeen Chess Olympiads, defeated reigning World Champion Anatoly Karpov in a 1976 tournament, and qualified for the 1982 World Chess Championship candidates matches. He later served as Bobby Fischer's second during the 1992 Fischer-Spassky rematch in Yugoslavia and in 2021 became the first male Asian chess player inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame.
