Eric Heiden is an American physician and former long track speed skater, road cyclist and track cyclist. At the 1980 Winter Olympics he was the most successful athlete of the Games, winning five individual gold medals while setting four Olympic records and one world record, a haul exceeded by no nation at those Games other than the Soviet Union and East Germany. His record of five individual gold medals at a single Winter Olympics has never been matched by another athlete, and he delivered the Athletes Oath at the 1980 Games before later training as a physician.
