Eric Abidal is a French former professional footballer, born on 11 September 1979, who played as a left-back or centre-back. He played mainly for Lyon and Barcelona and won 19 trophies across the two clubs, including two Champions Leagues with Barcelona. His later career was marred by a liver tumour, which led to a transplant. He was a France international for nine years and represented his country at two World Cups, finishing second in 2006, and at Euro 2008. His career is notable both for the trophies he won in Lyon and Barcelona colours and for his return to professional football after serious illness and surgery.
