Derrick Rose is an American former professional basketball player, born on 4 October 1988 and raised in Chicago, where he attended Simeon Career Academy. After one season at the University of Memphis under coach John Calipari, he was drafted first overall by his hometown Chicago Bulls in the 2008 NBA draft. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2009 and in 2011 became the youngest player to win the NBA Most Valuable Player Award, at 22 years and 7 months. Knee injuries, including a torn ACL in the 2012 playoffs, interrupted his career. He later played for the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Utah Jazz, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies, often as a sixth man, before announcing his retirement in September 2024.
