Daniel Alberto Passarella, born on 25 May 1953, is an Argentine former footballer and manager who is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders of all time. Playing for Argentina, he was part of two FIFA World Cup winning teams: he captained the nation to victory at the 1978 World Cup, which Argentina hosted, and he was also in the winning squad in 1986, making him the only Argentine player to win two World Cups. Although he played as a centre-back, he was a proficient goalscorer and was at one point football's highest-scoring defender, with 134 goals in 451 matches, a record later broken by the Dutch player Ronald Koeman. In 2004 Pele named him one of the 125 greatest living footballers at a FIFA awards ceremony, and in 2017 FourFourTwo ranked him 56th among the 100 all-time greatest footballers. As a manager he coached the Argentina and Uruguay national teams and several club sides, and later served four years as president of River Plate after winning the election in December 2009.
