Cyclone Taylor (1884 to 1979) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and civil servant, acknowledged as one of the first stars of the professional era of hockey. Born in Tara, Ontario, he played professionally as a cover-point and rover from 1906 to 1922, was recognized as one of the fastest skaters and most prolific scorers of his day, won five scoring championships in the PCHA and won the Stanley Cup twice, with Ottawa in 1909 and Vancouver in 1915. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1947. He also played lacrosse during the summers of his hockey career, joining the Ottawa Capitals of the National Lacrosse Union in the summer of 1908, though his biographer Eric Whitehead has suggested that reporters may have embellished his lacrosse abilities because of his hockey fame. Away from sport he worked for decades as an immigration official, rising to Commissioner of Immigration for British Columbia and the Yukon.
