The Vuelta a España, or Tour of Spain, is an annual multi-stage road cycling race primarily held in Spain. Inspired by the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia, it was first organised in 1935. The Spanish Civil War and World War II interrupted its early years, and it has been held every year since 1955. Along with those two races it is one of cycling's three Grand Tours, a UCI World Tour event running for three weeks on a changing route that finishes in Madrid. Since 1995 it has been held in late summer rather than spring, and the rider with the lowest aggregate time wears the red jersey.
