Christy Ring, born Nicholas Christopher Michael Ring in 1920 and died in 1979, was an Irish hurler from Cloyne in East Cork whose senior career with Cork ran for twenty-four years, from 1939 to 1963. After early years with Cloyne and St Enda's he joined the Glen Rovers club, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest hurlers in the history of the game. He set many championship records, including 65 career appearances, a scoring tally of 33 goals and 208 points and eight All-Ireland medals, although later players have passed some of them. The second youngest son of a gardener who had hurled for Cloyne, he left school before the age of fourteen and worked as a mechanic, a lorry driver and a delivery driver.
