Charles Albert Bender, known as Chief Bender and by the Ojibwe name Mandowescence, was a Native American professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball during the 1900s and 1910s. He was born on 5 May 1884. In 1911 he tied a record by pitching three complete games in a single World Series. He finished his career with a 212 to 127 win-loss record, a winning percentage of .625 and a career earned run average of 2.46. After his playing days he worked in baseball as a major league coach, minor league manager and player-manager, college manager and professional scout. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953 and died the following year, on 22 May 1954.
