Caster Semenya is a South African middle-distance runner, born on 7 January 1991, who has won two Olympic gold medals and three World Championships in the women's 800 metres. She first won world gold in 2009, then took the 2016 Olympic title and the 2017 World Championships, where she also won a bronze medal in the 1500 metres. After the doping disqualification of Mariya Savinova she was also awarded gold for the 2011 World Championships and the 2012 Olympics. Her 2009 victory was followed by sex testing, which caused controversy in the sporting world and in South Africa, and later reports disclosed the condition 5 alpha reductase 2 deficiency. Rules introduced by World Athletics in 2019 for athletes with certain differences of sex development require medication to suppress testosterone in the 400, 800 and 1500 metres. She refused the treatment and has pursued legal cases arguing the rules are discriminatory.
