Bruce Arena (born September 21, 1951) is an American soccer coach who also played lacrosse at a high level. Born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, he played both lacrosse and soccer at Nassau Community College, where he was an Honorable Mention All-American in lacrosse in 1970 and 1971, and then at Cornell University, where he was a 1972 Honorable Mention All-American, an All-Ivy first team selection and a 1973 Second Team All-American in lacrosse, while also keeping goal for the Cornell soccer team. After graduating he signed to play professional lacrosse for the Montreal Quebecois, spending a single season with the team in 1975, and the National Lacrosse League folded at the end of that season. He turned to soccer, earned one cap for the United States national team, and became one of the most successful coaches in North American soccer history, leading the national team at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups. He is a member of the NJCAA Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
