Bixente Lizarazu is a French former professional footballer, born on 9 December 1969, who played as a left-back and is widely regarded as one of the greatest full-backs in the history of the sport. He was known for his pace and athleticism combined with sharp defensive intelligence. He rose through the ranks at Bordeaux, helping the club to a runners-up finish in the 1995 to 1996 UEFA Cup, and as a native of the French Basque Country he spent one season at Athletic Club. In 1997 he joined Bayern Munich, where he won six Bundesliga championships and the UEFA Champions League, scoring his penalty in the final shootout. In an international career from 1992 to 2004 he earned 97 caps for France, played at three European Championships and two World Cups, and won the 1998 World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000.
