Bershawn Jackson, born on May 8, 1983, is an American track athlete whose main event is the 400 metre hurdles, although he also races the flat 400 metres. He is known by the nickname Batman. At the 2008 Summer Olympics he won the bronze medal in the 400 metre hurdles. Beyond the Games he has collected three medals at the World Championships, two gold and one bronze, and one gold medal at the World Indoor Championships, which together mark him as one of the dependable American one-lap specialists of his generation. His career illustrates how the 400 metre hurdles rewards athletes who combine flat-track speed with rhythm over the barriers.
