Barbara Ann Scott

Winter Sports

Barbara Ann Scott (1928 to 2012) was a Canadian figure skater from Ottawa, known as Canada's Sweetheart. She won the ladies' singles gold medal at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, the only Canadian to do so, and was World champion in 1947 and 1948 and European champion in the same two years, the first North American to win those titles. She held four Canadian national titles between 1944 and 1948. She began skating at seven at the Minto Skating Club and passed the gold figures test at ten. She kept her amateur status by returning a car given to her in 1947. Later she became a leading equestrian, and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1991.
