He began at Watford, made his first senior appearance in 2003 and was a key player in their promotion-winning 2005-06 season. He moved to Aston Villa in January 2007, won the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2009, and joined Manchester United in 2011, where he won the Premier League in 2013, the FA Cup in 2016 and the Europa League in 2017 and was made club captain in 2019.
