Andrew Symonds

Bat-and-Ball Sports

Andrew Symonds was an Australian international cricketer, born on 9 June 1975, who played all three formats of the game as a batting all-rounder. Known by the nickname Roy, he batted right-handed in the middle order and alternated between medium pace and off-spin bowling, and he was also noted for exceptional fielding. He belonged to the Australian squads that won the 2003 Cricket World Cup and, four years later, the 2007 Cricket World Cup. After mid-2008 he spent long periods out of the team for disciplinary reasons, including alcohol abuse, and he retired from all professional cricket in February 2012 to focus on his family life. He died in a single-vehicle car crash near Townsville, Queensland, on 14 May 2022, aged 46.
