Equestrian Sports

Alice Van-Springsteen (12 July 1918 to 13 September 2008), born Alice Grace van der Veen in Arvada, Colorado, was an American stuntwoman and jockey. She debuted in rodeo at thirteen at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1932 and performed during the opening ceremony of the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. A close friend of Dale Evans, she served as Evans' stunt double through most of her career and also doubled for Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet and for many other actresses. She also rode as a jockey and became the third woman ever to receive a trainer's license for Thoroughbred horses. In 1937 she was invited to ride in the Royal Easter Show in Australia, and in 1993 she was presented with a Golden Boot Award for her contributions to western cinema. She died in 2008 at the age of 90.
