Alfred Edwin Shelhamer, known as Shelly (1918 to 1986), was an American Thoroughbred jockey who rode mostly on the Maryland circuit under the Hall of Fame trainer H. Guy Bedwell until he retired in 1945. He finished fifth on Sun Egret in the 1938 Preakness Stakes and tenth on Sweep Swinger in the 1942 Kentucky Derby, and in 1940 he won the Old Colony Stakes at Narragansett Park on the champion two-year-old filly Level Best. The best horse he ever rode was the Triple Crown winner Whirlaway. After his riding career he worked as a racing official, helped promote the use of film patrol to monitor races, and served as one of three stewards at the first Breeders' Cup, held at Hollywood Park in 1984. He died in Hollywood, California.
