Alfred Lyttelton KC, who lived from 7 February 1857 to 5 July 1913, was a British politician and sportsman from the Lyttelton family who excelled at both football and cricket. During his time at university he took part in Varsity Matches in five sports: cricket from 1876 to 1879, football from 1876 to 1878, athletics in 1876, when he was selected to throw the hammer, and rackets and real tennis, both from 1877 to 1879. That range made him arguably the pre-eminent sportsman of his generation, and his only rival in versatility was Oxford's Cuthbert Ottaway. He was the first man to represent England at both football and cricket. He was also a successful politician and served as Secretary of State for the Colonies between 1903 and 1905.
