Adrian Maguire was born on 29 April 1971 in Kilmessan, County Meath, Ireland, and was a National Hunt jockey who later became a racehorse trainer. He began in Irish pony racing at the age of nine, riding more than 200 winners there, and rode his first winner under rules at Sligo in 1990, with his first British success following a year later. In the 1993 to 1994 season he rode 194 winners and lost the jockeys championship to Richard Dunwoody by three. He won 1,024 races in the United Kingdom, and one description calls him the greatest jump jockey never to be British champion. A fall at Warwick in March 2002 broke his neck, and he announced his retirement on 28 October 2002 at the age of 31. He then trained racehorses from Lombardstown, County Cork. His nephew Jason Maguire, also a National Hunt jockey, won the 2011 Grand National on Ballabriggs.
