FAQs

What was John McEnroe's famous You cannot be serious outburst at Wimbledon?

A 1981 first round rant at the umpire that Telegraph readers later voted the top Wimbledon moment of all time.

It happened in the opening round of Wimbledon in 1981, in a match against Tom Gullikson. After a shot McEnroe hit was called out, he complained to chair umpire Edward James, and the umpire awarded a point against him. Readers of Britain's Telegraph later voted the rant the top Wimbledon moment of all time. McEnroe later admitted he felt terrible about it, and he titled his autobiography You Cannot Be Serious.
