Biathlon is a winter sport combining cross country skiing with rifle marksmanship, in which competitors ski a course interrupted by stops at a shooting range where missed targets add time or distance penalties. It has been part of the Winter Olympic programme since 1960 and is governed internationally by the International Biathlon Union.

Origin Year1767 is the first recorded competition combining skiing and shooting skills, held between military ski-runner companies guarding the Swedish and Norwegian border. Modern competitive biathlon was codified much later, so this is the earliest documented contest and not the founding of the modern sport.
