Diving is an aquatic sport in which competitors perform acrobatic jumps from a springboard or platform into water, judged on technique, execution and degree of difficulty. It has been part of the Summer Olympics since 1904 and is governed internationally by World Aquatics, alongside swimming and water polo. The sport grew out of gymnastics training exercises performed over water in 19th-century Sweden and Germany before developing into a standalone competitive discipline.
