Sumo

Combat Sports

Sumo is a full-contact wrestling sport from Japan in which two competitors attempt to force each other out of a circular ring or force any part of the opponent's body other than the soles of the feet to touch the ground. Professional sumo in Japan retains a highly ritualized structure rooted in its origins as a Shinto religious rite, distinct from its status here as a competitive combat sport, with a formal ranking hierarchy topped by the yokozuna, or grand champion. The sport has been practiced in Japan for well over a thousand years and, while an amateur international federation exists, it is not part of the Olympic program.
