Club Atletico Penarol is a professional football club based in Montevideo, Uruguay, founded in 1891 originally as the football section of the Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club before becoming an independent Uruguayan institution, and one of the most decorated clubs in South American football, having won numerous Uruguayan league titles and multiple Copa Libertadores continental championships. Playing in black-and-yellow striped shirts, the club shares with rival Nacional an intense, historically class-inflected local rivalry known as the Clasico del Futbol Uruguayo, and its early 20th-century sides, drawn heavily from British railway workers and their successors, were instrumental in establishing organized football in Uruguay.
