Olympic programme status records whether a sport is actually part of the Olympic Games. Wikipedia notes the men's football World Cup is "the most-viewed sporting event in the world, surpassing the Olympic Games," a comparison that only makes sense because football itself is contested at the Olympics too. This dimension separates sports on the Olympic programme from those that have never been included.

FAQs
Why are basketball and cricket not grouped under Football Codes?
Basketball and cricket score through a hoop, net or wicket rather than a goal line, so they sit under Court and Net Team Sports or Bat-and-Ball Sports instead.
Football Codes covers the family of team sports descended from historical football codes in which two sides advance a ball toward an opposing goal or end zone, such as American football, association football, rugby league and rugby union. Basketball and cricket are excluded because they are scored through a hoop, net or wicket rather than a goal line, and this atlas groups them instead under Court and Net Team Sports and Bat-and-Ball Sports.
