National Hockey League

Professional Leagues

The National Hockey League is a professional ice hockey league in North America made up of 32 teams, 25 in the United States and 7 in Canada, and it is regarded as the premier ice hockey league in the world. It was organized in Montreal on November 26, 1917, after its predecessor, the National Hockey Association, suspended operations, and it began with four teams, all in Canada, which is why the word National appears in its name. By 1926 it was the only league contesting the Stanley Cup, the oldest professional sports trophy in North America, which is awarded each year to the league playoff champion. League headquarters have been in New York City since 1989, with offices in Toronto and Montreal.
