The AFC was formed 8 May 1954 at the Asian Games in Manila by thirteen founding national associations and now has 47 members organized into five regional sub-confederations. Israel was expelled from the AFC in 1974 after sustained political pressure from Arab and Muslim member associations that refused to play against it, and later competed in UEFA instead. AFC president Mohamed bin Hammam, who led the confederation from 2002 to 2011, was subsequently banned from football activity by FIFA over corruption allegations connected to Qatar's bid for the 2022 World Cup.
